Senior Accountant

SUMMARY:
 Supports the Budget & Finance Supervisor in overseeing accounting, auditing, purchasing and other business office functions to ensure accurate reporting and appropriate internal controls. 
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 Include the following:                                  
  • (Other appropriate duties may be assigned.)
  •  Supervise all accounting activities, including all general ledger transactions (includes all general fund activities, payroll, food service, internal service, student activity, scholarship and cafeteria).
  •  Daily cash management: Compile working cash flow statements by maintaining a working balance in a Concentration account.
  •  Analyze general fund accounts on a monthly basis. Ensure revenue and cash receipts are accounted for and recorded in the correct account.
  •  Ensure the completion of reconciliation of bank statements for all funds including student activity.
  •  Supervises payroll (District and Vo-Tech), accounts payable, cash receipts and accounts receivable. Creates procedures and systems to document internal and external steps of processes. 
  •  Work in conjunction with the Accounting Specialist to ensure the tax collectors receipts are deposited, properly coded, accounted for, and reconciled with the district.
  •  Direct District Liaison to complete, compile, and organize all necessary financial reports, supporting documentation, and schedules for the annual local audit including but not limited to the following:
  •  Before local auditors’ annual visit, prepare all various year end entries such as but not limited to: A/C payable, A/C receivable, accrue P/R, reconcile state share of FICA, accrue earned interest, reconcile the FAI document with posted revenue, and adjust benefit accounts to close out. Performs other duties to ensure audit completion in a timely manner. 
  •  Prepare the entity wide and the general-purpose statements to complete the annual financial report (AFR). Assist with development of MD&A and completion of the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report
  •  Assist the Budget and Finance Supervisor in formulating policies and procedures to guarantee adequate internal controls and efficient financial operations of the district.
  •  Assist with the annual budget process.
  •  Assist the CFO in overseeing purchasing and materials management to ensure compliance with district purchasing policies and state bidding requirements.
  •  Supports other Business Office functions as needed.
  •  Other applicable duties as needed.
  •  Serve as procurement administrator working on bidding and purchasing programs. Implements best practices for enhanced operations and reduction in costs. 
  •  Supports the Budget and Finance Supervisor for grant management and applications.  
  •  Develop and maintain a reference guide for staff on key auditing and purchasing functions. Meet with internal and external stakeholders to share, communicate and receive feedback. Provide staff development on finance processes and procedures to stakeholders. 
  •  Implement improvements for efficiency and improved internal controls including but not limited to online payments, electronic purchasing and enhanced technology for buildings and Departments. 
  •  Supports other Business Office functions as needed.
  •  Other applicable duties as needed.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. 
  • Three to five years experience in an applicable field, preferably in a public-school setting.
  • Prior supervisory experience preferred.
  • Strong communication skills both oral and written.
  • Working knowledge of computer software programs including database programs word and spreadsheet programs including the ability to utilize formulas and work with numbers.
  • Working knowledge of Governmental Accounting Standards and Modified Accrual Accounting
  • Track record of accuracy, attention to detail and confidentiality.
  • Ability to develop and create presentations and other information to communicate complicated budget and financial information to stakeholders.
 
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance or Accounting.
  • CPA preferred
