High School Family and Consumer Science Teacher

General McLane School District, in Erie County, Pa., is searching for a Family and Consumer Science Teacher for the 2021-2022 School Year at General McLane High School.  

Position: Family and Consumer Science Teacher
Location: General McLane High School (Grades 9-12, around 700 students)
Required Certification: Valid Pennsylvania Family and Consumer Science Certificate; additional high school certification(s) preferred

Job Selection Expectations: Applications, resumes, letters of reference, and written samples will be reviewed for required certification; demonstrated related knowledge, skills, and abilities; and ability to communicate effectively. As candidates progress through the selection process they may be asked to perform additional written exercises, complete panel interviews, and perform a sample lesson related to the subject area.
 
Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
•          Knowledge of PA Standards as well as National Family and Consumer Science Standards
(NASAFACS).
•          Skill in cognitively engaging students in subject matter using varying levels of Depth of Knowledge (DOK).
•          Knowledge of current trends in Family and Consumer Science.
•          Knowledge of instructional disciplines of grades 9-12.
•          Skill in developing lessons to accommodate individual needs of diverse learners (e.g. ESL, ELL, IEP students).
•          Skill in utilizing appropriate instructional resources that will enhance student learning.
•          Skill in delivering instruction, either in person or through electronic methods, that is stimulating and promotes student engagement.
•          Ability to apply classroom management strategies that promote positive behavior, discourage behaviors that are not conducive to learning, and promote self-control in students.
•          Ability to communicate in a manner which is sensitive to culture, gender, intellectual and physical differences.
•          Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of people, such as subordinates, peers, or citizens.
•          Ability to utilize positive behavior supports to encourage desired student behavior.
•          Ability to communicate ideas verbally in a clear, concise, and organized manner.
•          Ability to continuously evaluate one’s strategies or instructional content during
instruction, and adapt when needed, through the use of formative assessments.
•          Ability to modify one’s behavior, work methods, or plans in response to changing conditions and new information.
•          Ability to direct student conversations to encourage deeper understanding.
•          Ability to assess one's own performance or lesson design to make improvements or take corrective action.
•          Ability to uphold district policy and professional ethical standards.
•          Ability to control one’s own emotions and remain objective and professional in stressful,
sensitive, or personally unpleasant situations.
•          Ability to use appropriate grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and spelling in written or electronic documents.
•          Ability to maintain a positive working relationship with coworkers through comfortable and appropriate interpersonal interaction.
•          Ability to work effectively with fellow teachers in a co-teaching environment.
•          Ability to establish and execute a budget to acquire the materials needed to maintain the middle school Family and Consumer Science curriculum.
•          Ability to work collaboratively with administration, teachers, students and parents to facilitate the appropriate use of materials and to enhance all curriculum areas.
•          Ability to work closely with faculty to create effective collaborations.
•          Ability to coordinate, enrich, expand instructional programs.
•          Ability to work with individual students and staff and implement the goals of the district.
•          Ability to secure fresh grocery items for Family and Consumer Science Labs when necessary and appropriate.
•          Ability to demonstrate a responsibility in establishing and executing budget priorities.
•          Ability to maintain professionalism, exhibit ethical behaviors, and model appropriate social behaviors to young adults.
 
Application Requirements: Applicants are expected to possess a valid and appropriate certificate for the vacant position at the time of application as well as all necessary clearances. Additional qualifications and experience will be considered and may be necessary or desirable for individual positions along with a demonstrated competency in writing and communication skills.
